In August 2008, what started out as a routine sales prospect call to Tsara Rozen (K) Ltd. Farm in Limuru, Redhill, was to lead to one of Dilpack’s many technical innovative achievements.

Mr. Jan Moolener, Managing Director, explained that one of his speciality blooms was Zantedeschia, or Calla Lillies, a fine long stemmed blossom with a large delicate head.

The traditional shaped sleeve would not provide this variety with the protection required for transport nor the presentation for retail.

The shape he needed could not be found anywhere locally or regionally. As a result the sleeves had to be imported, generating cost implications. If Dilpack could supply the sleeve, Tsara Rozen would most definitely be interested.

Situation:
• Non-standard sleeve design requirement.

Problem:
• Unavailable in region.

Implication:
• Importation leading to higher costs.
• Minimum quantities leading to higher stocks.
• Higher stock locking up cash flow.
• Less resource to grow business.

Need Payoff:
• A local supplier to provide the unique sleeve.

The Project:
Dilpack and its project partnering suppliers went through nine months of phases:
• Initial project analysis work both within Dilpack and overseas.
• Design and fabrication of two one-off critical-angle asymmetric welding knives with associated one-off heating elements, attendant cooling units and travelling rails.
• Adaptation of manufacturing units to accommodate shape former.
• Development of new graphical templates.
• Adaptation of current operational activities.
• Development trials.
• Customer approval.

Not just the Y shaped sleeve but the complete need payoff:
• LOCAL MANUFACTURE.

• More customer opportunity to grow business.
